Overview
Caloundra sits at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, and its garage doors live very different lives depending on the street. A door facing the ocean at Shelly Beach, a boat bay at Golden Beach and a wide double door in a young Baringa estate all wear out in their own way. Thom works on all of them.
He's based in Maroochydore and comes down Nicklin Way or the Sunshine Motorway to reach you. The work is the same as anywhere on the coast: servicing, repairs, broken springs and cables, and opener replacement. Every job is done by Thom himself, on sectional, roller and tilt doors and the common opener types.
Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300, depending on the door size and the labour involved. Tell him what the door is doing when you book, and he'll explain what the job is likely to involve before he starts.

Salt on the headland beaches
Kings Beach, Shelly Beach, Moffat Beach and Dicky Beach sit right on the ocean. Onshore winds carry salt spray up off the rocks and the surf, and it settles on everything metal in the garage. Springs, cables, rollers and the screws holding the tracks all rust faster here than they do a few kilometres inland.
Watch for orange staining on the spring coils, cables that look furry or frayed near the bottom of the door, and rollers that squeal or catch. Once a year is the minimum for a service this close to the water, and many beachfront homes are better off with a check every six months. Between visits, rinse the outside of the door with fresh water now and then.

Boats, trailers and the Pumicestone Passage
Golden Beach looks across the Pumicestone Passage to Bribie Island, and plenty of garages here hold a boat or a trailer as well as the car. Gear that comes home wet from the water brings salt and damp inside, right next to the door hardware.
Boat bays are often wider or taller than a standard garage, which means a heavier door and springs that work harder. If a wide door starts to feel heavy, closes unevenly or leaves a gap at one end, get the springs and cables checked before one lets go. And keep drawbars and tow hitches clear of the door's path.

Young doors in the new estates
Out west, Caloundra West, Baringa and Bells Creek are part of Caloundra's southern growth area, and many homes there are only a few years old. Plenty have wide double garages. For a lot of families the garage door is the everyday front door, so it clocks up cycles fast.
A newer door still needs looking after. Fixings work loose and openers drift out of adjustment over the first few years. A first service is a good time to check the spring balance and make sure the safety reversal works properly. Just moved in? The new-home checklist covers what to look at in the first week.

Older homes around Battery Hill, Moffat Beach and Aroona
Battery Hill, Moffat Beach and Aroona are established suburbs. Moffat Beach still has original beach cottages alongside newer homes. Across all three, many doors came with the house, and nobody knows when they were last serviced.
For a door like that, the first service doubles as a health check. Thom looks at the spring balance, the cables and drums, the rollers and tracks, and the opener. Then he tells you what's worn and what still has life in it. It's far easier to replace a tired cable when it suits you than after it snaps.

Once a year at the very least. Salt spray off the ocean rusts springs, cables and fixings faster, so a door facing the water at Kings Beach, Shelly Beach, Moffat Beach or Dicky Beach may need a check every six months. A door that's getting louder, slower or heavier is due now, whatever the date.
Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300, depending on the door size and the labour involved. Tell Thom what the door is doing when you book, and he'll explain what the job is likely to involve before he starts. Emergencies outside 6am to 6pm are covered 24/7.
No. Don't use the opener and don't try to lift the door by hand. With a broken spring the door is far heavier than it looks, and the other spring or a cable can let go too. Keep kids, pets and cars clear, then call Thom. A snapped spring that leaves you stuck is an emergency callout.
