What to do while you wait
First, keep everyone away from the door, pets included. A door with a broken spring or cable can drop without warning.

Using the manual release safely
Every automatic garage door has a manual release. On a sectional door it's usually a cord with a red handle hanging from the opener rail. On a roller door it's often a cord or lever near the motor. Pulling it disconnects the door from the motor so you can move it by hand.
Only use it with the door fully closed and the springs working. If the door is open, or a spring or cable has broken, pulling the release can let the door fall hard. When the door is closed and balanced, pull the release, then lift from the handle or the bottom rail, never the gaps between panels. To go back to automatic, re-engage the release and run the opener once.

Door stuck open or won't close
