Garage Door Spring and Cable Repairs on the Sunshine Coast

The clearest sign is a door that won't lift, or feels far heavier than usual. Plenty of people hear a loud bang from the garage when a spring snaps. Look at the spring above the door. A gap in the coil means it's broken.

Other signs are a door that drops fast or sits crooked. If the opener runs but the door barely moves, stop using it. Forcing a door with a broken spring can strip the opener's gears and bend the top panel.

Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft above the door. They wind up as the door closes and unwind to help lift it. You'll find them on most newer sectional doors. Extension springs run along the tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. They're common on older and lighter doors.

The two aren't interchangeable. Each spring is matched to the weight and height of your door, and the wrong one leaves the door heavy or makes it fly up. Thom matches the replacement to your door and sets the tension so the door sits balanced.

Roller doors hide their springs inside the drum at the top of the opening. The springs wind up as the door comes down, and that stored tension is what makes a roller door easy to lift.

Over time the tension drops. The door gets heavy or creeps down on its own. Re-tensioning puts the lift back. It's a job for a technician, because the springs are wound tightest when the door is closed, and letting the tension go by accident can spin the drum hard. Thom re-tensions roller doors and checks the bearings and brackets that carry the drum.

On a sectional door, the springs lift the door through two steel cables, one on each side. The cables wind onto drums on the spring shaft. If a cable frays or snaps, the door hangs crooked or jams part way, even when the springs are fine.

Cables and springs wear together, and a spring that lets go can knock a cable off its drum. So Thom checks both every time. He replaces frayed cables, re-seats them on the drums and checks the bottom brackets where they hook on. Salt air rusts cables, so on coastal homes they're often the next thing to go.

A wound torsion spring stores a lot of energy. If it slips or lets go without the proper winding bars, it can break fingers, or worse. Cables and bottom brackets are under the same load, so undoing the wrong bolt can release it all at once.

This is the part of garage door work that sends people to hospital, and it's the main reason to call a technician. While you wait, keep kids and pets out of the garage.

Springs are rated in cycles, where one cycle is the door opening and closing once. Use the door four or five times a day and a spring wears out sooner than one on a door that barely moves. Near the beach, rust shortens that again, and a rusty spring is weaker and more likely to snap mid-lift.

A regular service is the easiest way to catch a tired spring before it breaks. Thom checks the springs and the balance of the door at every service.

Call or book a callout and tell Thom what the door is doing. If you can, send a photo of the spring above the door. It helps him bring the right one.

On site, he makes the door safe and lets off any tension left in the system before the broken spring comes off. With the new spring on, he checks the cables and drums, then resets the tension and balances the door. He tests it by hand and on the opener before he packs up.
