Overview
Most garage doors don't fail all at once. They get louder, then slower. They start sitting crooked or stopping half way. Then one morning a spring lets go and the door won't budge.
Thom is the owner-operator of Deadlock Garage Doors, based in Maroochydore. He has 3.5 years of hands-on work, he's trained across multiple garage door brands, systems and businesses, and he's fully insured (public liability).
A good repair starts with finding the real fault. A door that won't open looks like an opener problem, but it's often a broken spring or a snapped cable, and a new motor won't fix either. So Thom checks the whole door first, then tells you what's wrong and what he'd do about it.

Broken garage door springs
Springs do the heavy lifting on every garage door. When one breaks, the door feels like it weighs a tonne. It won't lift on the opener, or it drops fast when you try.
Thom replaces torsion springs on sectional doors and extension springs on older doors, and re-tensions the springs inside roller doors. Tell him the door type when you ring, so he brings the right spring. Leave a broken spring alone until he gets there. Springs hold enough force to cause serious injury.

02 / 12
Snapped cables and worn drums
On a sectional door, two steel cables run from the bottom corners up to drums on the spring shaft. When one frays or snaps, the door hangs crooked or jams part way.
Salt air near the beach wears cables faster. Thom replaces frayed or snapped cables and checks the drums and bottom brackets they hook onto. Then he resets the door so it lifts level. Stop using a door with a loose cable. It can drop without warning.

03 / 12
Door off its track or hanging crooked
A door comes off its track when a roller jumps out or a cable lets go. A bump from the car does it too. However it happens, the door is now heavy and off balance.
Don't force it back or run the opener. Keep people and cars clear, and call. Thom takes the weight off safely, refits the door and replaces any bent track or worn rollers. Then he works out why it jumped, so it doesn't happen again.

04 / 12
Worn rollers and a noisy garage door
A squeal is often dry or worn rollers or hinges. Grinding can be a roller with a failed bearing, or the door rubbing on the track. A loud bang usually points to a spring or a cable, and that one's worth a call straight away.
Thom swaps worn rollers and tightens loose hinges and brackets. He lubricates the parts that need it and keeps grease off the tracks, where it only collects grit. Noise is often the first warning before something breaks.
05 / 12
Dented or damaged panels
Reversed into the door, or had a bin blown into it in a storm? A dent can be a small ding or a bent section that stops the door running true. A kinked panel puts extra strain on the rollers and the opener.
Thom looks at dents and damage at a callout. He checks the door still runs safely, then tells you if the section can be straightened or needs replacing. Claiming on insurance? Take photos before anything is moved.
06 / 12
Openers and motors that won't respond
If the door won't move on the remote, start with the easy checks. Is the power point on? Is the remote battery flat? Is something blocking the safety beams near the floor? Has someone pressed the lock button on the wall control?
If it's none of those, the fault could be the motor or the logic board. Or it's the door, because a broken spring makes any door too heavy for its opener. Thom checks the door and the opener together, and tells you straight when a new motor makes more sense.

Roller door repairs
A roller door is a steel curtain that rolls up onto a drum above the opening. Springs inside the drum take most of the weight. When a roller door gets heavy or won't stay up, the spring tension has usually dropped.
Thom re-tensions roller door springs, replaces worn bearings, straightens or replaces bent guides, and fixes locks that won't catch. Roller door tension isn't a DIY job. The springs are wound tightest when the door is closed, and they can spin the drum hard if they're let go by accident.
08 / 12
Sectional and tilt door repairs
Sectional doors, often called panel lift doors, are hinged panels that roll up on side tracks and sit under the ceiling. Torsion springs do the lifting, with a cable and drum on each side. More moving parts means more to wear, mostly rollers, hinges, cables and springs.
Tilt doors are one solid panel that swings out and up, on springs and pivot arms. As those wear, the door sags or won't stay open. Thom repairs both types, and he'll tell you honestly if an old tilt door is near the end of its life.

Repair, service or replace?
If the door is sound and one part has failed, fixing that part is almost always the better spend. A regular service catches worn rollers and frayed cables before they leave you stuck, and keeps repairs small.
A new door starts to make sense when the panels are rusted through or the frame is badly bent, or when parts for an old door aren't made any more. Thom will tell you which side of that line your door is on.

What a repair callout involves
Call or book a callout and tell Thom what the door is doing. A photo or a short video helps.
On site, he checks the whole door before he starts: springs, cables, drums, rollers, tracks, the opener and the safety reversal. He explains what's wrong and what he recommends, then does the repair and tests the door by hand and on the opener. Every job is done by Thom.
Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300, depending on the door size and the labour involved.

Emergency garage door repairs
A door stuck open overnight, a snapped spring, a car trapped inside or a door hanging off its track can't wait. Thom takes emergency callouts 24/7 across the Sunshine Coast. Call first and keep clear of the door. Don't pull the manual release on a door that's stuck open or has a broken spring, because it can drop.

Garage door repairs across the Sunshine Coast
Thom works out of Maroochydore and covers the Sunshine Coast, from Mudjimba and Mount Coolum down through Mooloolaba, Buderim and the Kawana suburbs to Caloundra and Caloundra West. Near the beach, salt air eats into cables and springs faster, so coastal doors tend to need repairs sooner. Find your suburb below.

Questions
Common questions before you book
Listen to the motor. If it hums or strains but the door barely moves, a broken spring or cable is the usual cause, because the springs do the heavy lifting and the motor only guides the door. If the motor is silent, check the power point and the remote battery first. Either way, don't keep pressing the button. That can burn out a good motor. Call Thom and tell him what you're seeing.
Some small jobs, yes. Keeping the tracks clear, wiping grit off the rollers, changing the remote battery and testing the safety reversal are all fine for an owner. Anything that holds spring tension isn't. That means springs, cables, drums and the bottom brackets on a sectional door. They hold a lot of force and can cause serious injury if they let go. Leave those parts to a technician with the right tools.
It should. Openers are set to stop and reverse when the door touches something on the way down, and many also have beam sensors near the floor. Test it now and then by laying a flat piece of timber under the door and closing it. The door should touch it and go back up. If it doesn't, stop using the opener and book a callout. A door that won't reverse can badly hurt a child or a pet.
Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300, depending on the door size and the labour involved. The guide to service and repair costs goes through what makes one job bigger than another.
Yes. Thom repairs roller doors, sectional (panel lift) doors and tilt doors. Roller doors mostly need their spring tension and guides looked at. Sectional doors run on cables, drums, rollers and hinges that wear at different rates. He's trained across multiple garage door brands and systems, so the type of door you have is rarely a problem. If you're not sure what you've got, send a photo.
