How to Program a Garage Door Remote: Learn Buttons, Keypads and Cars

The short answer
Put the opener into learn mode with the learn or code button on the motor unit, then press the remote button. Most openers confirm with a light that flashes, comes on or goes out, depending on the brand. Each maker uses different buttons, so check the steps for your model, and only pair a remote built for that opener.

Question 01
Where is the learn button on a garage door opener?
The learn button sits on the motor unit, usually behind a cover or access panel. A sectional or tilt door motor usually hangs from a ceiling rail. ATA's GDO-6 manual fits a roller door opener over the door axle at the end of the drum. Steel-Line says to remove the cover to reach the control panel, using a stepladder.
Not every maker calls it a learn button. Read the brand and model off the motor unit first, then match it to a row below. Each row comes from that maker's own instructions or from Steel-Line's programming guide, which covers several brands.
| Opener | Button to use | What the maker says to do |
|---|---|---|
| B&D roller door opener | CODE SET | Hold CODE SET for two seconds, then hold a remote button for 3 seconds, twice |
| B&D sectional door opener | MODE, then the blue CLOSE button | Press MODE until the remote LED lights, hold CLOSE, hold the remote button for 3 seconds twice, then release CLOSE and press MODE to finish |
| Merlin (for example the Commander Elite MS105MYQ) | Yellow LEARN button | Hold the remote button, press and release LEARN, let go of the remote when the opener light flashes |
| Steel-Line SD800, SD1200, Sprint 800 and Mustang | P and + | Hold P and + until LED 7 flashes, press +, press the remote button twice, then P to save |
| Marantec | Code button | Press it once until the LED dot flashes, press the remote button, then press it again once the LED goes out to save (per Steel-Line) |
| Boss | Radio Set button | Hold it briefly, then press the remote button (per Steel-Line) |
Question 02
How do I pair a new remote to my garage door opener?
Pairing a new remote takes three moves: put the opener into learn mode, press and hold the remote button you want, and wait for the opener light to confirm. Merlin's manual says that if you let go of the remote before the opener light flashes, the opener has not learned the code. Then test it.
This is the general learn-button method, using Merlin's steps for its Commander Elite opener as the example. Other brands change the buttons and timing, as the table above shows.
- Put a fresh battery in the new remote, and have the door fully shut with the doorway clear.
- Climb up to the motor unit and take off the cover or access panel over the buttons.
- Press and hold the button on the remote you want to use.
- Press and release the yellow LEARN button on the opener. Keep holding the remote button.
- Let go of the remote button when the opener light flashes. Merlin says it has now learned the code.
- Come down off the ladder, stand where you can see the whole door, and press the remote to test it.
Press the learn button, don't hold it. On the same Merlin opener, holding LEARN until the indicator light comes on and then for about 6 seconds more erases every remote. Steel-Line also notes that a reset isn't always required to add a new remote, so don't clear anything unless the manual for your model says to.
Question 03
Can you pair any garage door remote with any opener?
No. A remote only pairs with an opener that uses the same code system. Steel-Line's advice is to match the remote's brand to the opener's, because each brand's transmitters and receivers work on their own frequency. Merlin's manual goes further for its Commander Elite: generic compatible accessories are not approved for that opener.
B&D describes rolling code as a security feature that changes the access code every time you use it. A remote built for a different code system may not be able to follow that pattern, so it may not pair even when the learn steps are right.
- Universal remotes: Merlin says some may work with its motors, but it recommends genuine Merlin remotes and does not test third party remotes.
- Finding the match: read the brand and model on the motor unit, not the remote, and buy for that.
Remote dead rather than refusing to pair? That's a different problem, covered in garage door remote not working.
Question 04
How many remotes can one garage door opener hold?
It depends on the opener. Steel-Line's SD800 family holds 6 codes, and coding a seventh deletes the oldest. Merlin's manual for the Commander Elite MS105MYQ lists 64 handset codes plus 4 keypads, and ATA's GDO-6 EasyRoller manual says up to 64 remotes. Merlin's general FAQ says up to 180 remotes per opener, so check your model's manual.
| Opener | Remote memory | What happens when it's full | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel-Line SD800, SD1200, Sprint 800 and Mustang | 6 codes | The oldest code is deleted | Steel-Line ZT07/ZTWB coding sheet |
| Merlin Commander Elite MS105MYQ | 64 handset codes, plus 4 keypad devices | Not stated | Merlin installation manual |
| ATA GDO-6 EasyRoller | Up to 64 remotes | Not stated | ATA installation manual |
| Merlin openers (general) | Up to 180 remotes | Not stated | Merlin FAQ |
The small-memory openers matter most in a busy house. On a Steel-Line SD800 with six codes, adding one more remote quietly bumps out the oldest one, which may be the one in your partner's car. Count what you have before you add.
Question 05
Can I add a remote without getting up a ladder?
On some openers, yes. ATA's GDO-6 manual describes remote coding: press a pen into the coding hole of a remote that already works, in range of the opener, and it flashes and beeps. Then hold a button on the new remote for 3 seconds and release, and the opener stops flashing and beeping.
ATA lists times when remote coding won't work on that opener: when it's running on battery backup, when the service indicator is on, and when the door is showing that a blocked safety beam stopped it closing. If the opener won't respond, check those three first.
The B&D, Merlin and Steel-Line steps above all use the button on the motor unit. Check your model's manual before you assume either way, and if it has no ladder-free method, use the steps above.
Question 06
How do I set up a garage door keypad?
A wireless keypad pairs much like a remote. Steel-Line says the remote steps also work for a keypad. On Merlin's E840M keypad, you press and release LEARN on the opener, enter a 4-digit PIN of your choice, then hold ENTER until the opener light flashes. Then test the PIN.
- Find the learn button on the motor unit, as above.
- Press and release it. On Merlin's opener, the indicator light glows steadily.
- Key in a 4-digit PIN of your choice on the keypad.
- Press and hold ENTER, and let go once the opener light flashes.
- Close the door, step outside and test the PIN with the doorway in view.
To change a PIN on the Merlin E840M, the manual says to enter the existing PIN, hold the # button until the light flashes twice, then enter the new PIN and press ENTER. Merlin's E850M keypad lets you set up to five permanent PINs for family and ten temporary codes for visitors or tradespeople. Merlin says it uses rolling code and carries an IP55 weather-resistant rating.
Fitting a keypad is a question of which one suits your opener. The guide to converting a manual garage door to automatic covers remotes and keypads as part of a new opener set-up.
Question 07
Can I program my car to open the garage door?
Not with every opener. Some cars have HomeLink buttons built in, but Merlin says HomeLink is not currently compatible with Merlin garage door or gate openers, because HomeLink only confirms compatibility in North America and Europe. Merlin recommends its E964M car visor remote instead. Merlin also says myQ doesn't work with any car brands in Australia.
If your opener is another brand, check that maker's own advice before you try to pair a car button. A visor remote made for your opener pairs with the same learn steps as any other remote.
Question 08
Why won't my garage door opener learn a new remote?
Usually the remote doesn't match the opener's code system, or the learn steps were cut short. Other causes are vacation mode, a mode that blocks coding, or a full memory that has pushed an older remote out. If a matching remote still won't pair after you follow your model's steps exactly, the opener itself may need checking.
- Wrong remote. Check the brand and model on the motor unit against the remote's packaging.
- Let go too early. Merlin says releasing the remote button before the opener light flashes means the code wasn't learned. Try again and wait for the flash.
- Held learn too long. On Merlin's opener, a long hold on LEARN wipes every remote, which can look like the new one failed. Re-add each remote.
- Memory full. On a Steel-Line SD800, a seventh code pushes out the oldest, so an older remote stops working.
- Vacation mode on. ATA lists vacation mode as a reason remotes don't work on its GDO-6, and says to turn it off.
- Coding blocked. On ATA's GDO-6, the ladder-free remote coding method is off while the opener runs on battery backup, the service light is on, or a blocked safety beam has stopped the door closing. Code at the motor unit instead.
If none of that fixes it and the wall button is acting up too, the fault is likely in the opener rather than the remote. Thom handles garage door repairs and garage door motor replacement across the Sunshine Coast. Call 0402 882 653 or book a callout.

Moving house or changing tenants? Every remote that's still learned to the opener keeps working. Merlin's example is a past owner who kept a visor remote and a spare keyring remote. So if you've just moved in, say around Maroochydore, clear the old codes before you pair your own. The new home garage door checklist covers that. More questions people ask
Only the ones that came with the opener. Merlin's manual says the remotes and wireless wall button supplied with its opener are programmed at the factory. If you buy more remotes, the opener has to be programmed to accept each one, using the learn steps for your model. Until then, a new remote does nothing. Put a fresh battery in it before you start.
No. Openers from different makers can sit close to 433 MHz, but that doesn't make their remotes swap over. Merlin lists 433.30, 433.92 and 434.54 MHz for its Commander Elite, and ATA lists 433.47, 433.92 and 434.37 MHz with its own TrioCode 128 coding for the GDO-6. The frequency and the code system both have to match, so buy a remote made for your opener.
Usually, yes. Each of the big Australian makers publishes the pairing steps for its own openers, and the job usually takes only a stepladder and the remote. Touch only the opener's buttons, and keep your hands off the springs, cables and drums near the motor. If the remote matches the opener and still won't pair, the opener may need a look. See garage door remote not working first.
Test it from where you can see the whole doorway. Merlin's manual says to run the opener only when the door is in full view, free of obstruction and properly adjusted, and that no one should go in or out while the door is moving. It also says not to let children use the remotes. Keep kids, pets and cars clear while you test.
On some openers, yes. Steel-Line's coding sheet for its SD800 family says the delete steps clear every programmed remote, wireless wall button and wireless keypad in one go. So after a wipe, re-add the keypad PIN and any wireless wall button as well as your remotes. Check your own manual, since other brands handle this differently.
If a matching remote won't pair and the wall button is playing up too, the fault is likely in the opener. Thom repairs and replaces garage door openers from his Maroochydore base.
