Garage Door Opener Battery Backup: What It Does, How Long It Lasts and Where It Is

The short answer

A garage door opener battery backup keeps the motor running when the mains power drops out, so you can still get the car in or out. It switches on by itself and recharges once the power returns. It only gives a handful of runs, though, so in a long Sunshine Coast blackout you may still need the manual release.

Question 01

What does a garage door opener battery backup do?

A battery backup takes over from the mains power the moment it drops out, so the opener can still lift and lower the door. B&D says you don't need to do anything to switch it on during a storm, and it starts recharging by itself once the power comes back. It's a short-term bridge, not a generator.

B&D puts it plainly: as soon as the power is lost, the backup battery kicks in and the door still operates, and when the power returns it begins recharging automatically. Merlin's 24V backup manual describes the same switch-over for its openers.

What a backup doesn't do matters just as much. It won't fix an opener that was already faulty, it won't run the opener's light on some models, and it runs out. Knowing those limits before the storm is what stops a flat battery turning into a car stuck in the garage.

Question 02

How many times can you open a garage door with a battery backup?

Only a handful, and it varies by system. Plan on a few trips, not a week. B&D puts its backup at two to four lift-and-lower cycles on a typical outage, and Merlin rates a fully charged 24V unit at one to two days of normal running. Treat it as enough to get through a short outage.

Battery backup runtime and charging, as the makers state it (B&D and Merlin pages and manuals, checked October 2026)
B&D battery backupMerlin 24V backup (M-BBU24V)
Runs on batteryUsually two to four full cyclesOne to two days of normal operation, fully charged
Switching onAutomatic when the power goes outAutomatic when the opener loses mains power
RechargingAutomatic when the power comes backWithin 48 hours of the power being restored
First chargeNot statedAllow 24 to 48 hours before relying on it
When it runs lowNot statedThe batteries disconnect and the opener stops running on battery
Battery lifeNot stated (one-year warranty)3 to 5 years under normal use

Merlin's manual says that if the battery voltage drops too low, the batteries disconnect and the opener no longer runs on battery power. Merlin warns you first: a flashing yellow light with a beep every 30 seconds means the batteries are low. If you need the car out in the morning, move it out while you still have runs left.

B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure manual adds a way to stretch the charge: holding the STOP button for 10 seconds while the opener is on battery shuts the control board down to keep battery use to a minimum. Check your own model's manual before you try it.

Question 03

Where is the battery for a garage door opener?

It depends on the opener. B&D says its battery backup sits inside the opener itself, so you won't see it from the floor. Merlin's 24V backup is a separate box mounted on the wall or ceiling within about 80cm of the motor, or clipped onto the back of its LR-Drive roller door motor. Your manual shows which you have.

The Merlin manual says the wall or ceiling box goes on a support beam within cable distance of the motor, and on the LR-Drive it fits onto the rear cover of the motor. Look for a small box with its own coloured lights near the opener and a cable running into it.

If you can't see a separate box, the battery may be under the opener's cover. B&D's manual says only experienced service people should remove covers from the opener, so don't open it up to find out. The remote's coin cell is a different battery altogether and doesn't keep the opener running.

Question 04

How can I tell if my garage door opener has a battery backup?

Not every opener has one. B&D includes the battery backup with its Smart Pro opener, but on its Smart and Secure openers it's an optional extra. Look for a separate battery box with status lights, check the manual's parts list for a battery kit, or switch the opener off at the wall and see if the door still runs.

  • Look for status lights. On Merlin's 24V backup, a solid green light means the batteries are fully charged and a flashing green light means they're charging.
  • Check the manual. B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure manual lists two battery kits in the box for the Smart Pro only, and has a separate section on the backup as an option for Smart and Secure.
  • Watch the light during a blackout. B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure manual uses the main light as the signal: three flashes as a cycle begins and ten as it finishes means the opener is on battery.
  • Find the model number. It's on the opener, and the maker's website or manual for that model says whether a backup is fitted or can be added.

The beeps and flashes a backup makes have their own guide: why your garage door opener is beeping matches each pattern to its meaning.

Question 05

What won't work while the opener is running on battery?

Merlin says the motor's lights won't turn on in battery mode. B&D says app control depends on your Wi-Fi still being up, and limit setup and adding a new remote are switched off on battery. B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure manual adds that the backup won't take over if a fault was already active before the power went.

  • No opener light (Merlin). Merlin's manual says the motor unit's lights won't turn on in battery mode. Keep a torch in the garage for a night-time blackout.
  • App control needs Wi-Fi (B&D). If the modem is off in the blackout, the phone app won't reach the opener. The remotes and wall button still work.
  • No remote coding or limit setup (B&D). Adding a new remote and setting the door's travel limits are disabled while the opener runs on battery.
  • A fault blocks it (B&D). The battery backup won't kick in if a fault is active before the mains power goes off.
  • A flat or half-charged battery limits it (Merlin). Door operation may be limited until the batteries are fully charged.

A battery backup also can't make a faulty door safe to run. B&D's manual says not to use a door that needs repair or adjustment, on battery or otherwise. If a spring has gone, read what to do about a broken spring and call.

Question 06

Can I add a battery back up to my garage door opener?

Often, yes, if the maker offers a backup for your model. B&D says its battery backup is compatible with all B&D sectional door automatic openers. Merlin says its 24V backup suits select Merlin openers made from 2009 onwards and plugs into the opener. Check your opener's model number against the maker's compatibility information first.

Merlin's product page has a compatibility check for your motor, and B&D's battery backup page says its backup suits all B&D sectional door automatic openers. Both B&D and Merlin give their backups a one-year warranty. Once fitted, Merlin says to allow 24 to 48 hours for a full charge before you rely on it.

If your opener is too old to take a backup, or is failing anyway, a newer opener is the bigger decision. The garage door motor replacement cost guide helps you weigh repair against replace, and garage door motor replacement covers what Thom does when an opener has had it.

Question 07

How do I test the battery backup before storm season?

Run it on battery on purpose, on a calm day. Merlin's test is to unplug the opener at the power point, check the backup's light shows it's on battery, then open and close the door and plug it back in. B&D's test cuts the mains power while the door is moving. The door should keep going as normal.

  1. Pick a calm day with the door shut and the doorway clear of cars, bikes and bins.
  2. Switch the opener off at the power point or pull its plug. Merlin's manual says to disconnect the motor's power cord from the outlet.
  3. Check the backup's light. On Merlin's 24V backup, a solid yellow light means it's running on battery.
  4. Open and close the door once with the remote or wall button. Watch that it runs smoothly and stops where it should.
  5. Plug it back in and switch it on. On the Merlin unit, a flashing green light shows it's charging again.
  6. Leave it to recharge. Merlin says its batteries recharge within 48 hours once the power is back.

Practise the manual release on the same day, so you know the fallback if the battery runs flat. How to open a garage door manually in a power outage has the steps. For the door itself, getting a garage door ready for storm season covers wind ratings and bracing.

Question 08

When does a garage door backup battery need replacing?

Plan on replacing them every few years: Merlin rates its backup batteries at 3 to 5 years of normal use. On Merlin's unit, a red light that stays on with a beep every 30 seconds after the power returns means call for service. B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure manual lists seven flashes as a faulty backup battery.

Give a backup time before you write it off. After a long outage, Merlin says the batteries recharge within 48 hours. If your storm-season test shows the door won't run on battery after a full recharge, the battery or the backup unit needs looking at.

Local note

On the Sunshine Coast

Storm season is when a battery backup earns its keep, and when a flat one gets found out. Test it on a calm day before the first big storm, and practise the manual release at the same time. After a long blackout, Merlin allows up to 48 hours for a full recharge, so run your test again after that. Thom looks after openers in homes from Buderim to Sippy Downs and right across the coast.

More questions people ask

It's a rechargeable battery unit made for particular openers. Merlin's backup supplies 24V DC to the motor, and B&D's Smart Pro comes with a battery kit in the box. Because each pack suits particular models, check the opener's model number and the maker's manual before buying anything. The small coin cell in your remote is a separate battery and doesn't run the opener.

No. B&D says its battery backup starts recharging by itself as soon as the power comes back on. Merlin says its batteries recharge within 48 hours once the power is restored, and to allow 24 to 48 hours for the first full charge. Just keep the opener plugged in and switched on at the wall. If the backup still won't run the door after that, book a garage door repair.

If the opener has a working battery backup, yes. The remote and wall button keep working while the backup has charge. B&D notes that app control depends on your Wi-Fi still running, and that you can't code a new remote while the opener is on battery. With no backup, the remote won't work until the power returns, and you'll need the manual release.

Check the manual first. Some backups, like Merlin's 24V unit, are a separate box, and Merlin's fitting instructions start with disconnecting the mains power from the motor. Where the battery sits inside the opener, B&D says only experienced service people should remove covers from the opener. A battery inside the opener housing is a job for a technician: call 0402 882 653 or book a callout.

Then a backup alone isn't enough. B&D's manual says a garage with no pedestrian entrance door should have an emergency access device fitted, which lets you operate the door by hand from outside in a power failure. A battery backup runs out, so the outside release is the fallback. Opening a garage door manually from outside explains how those releases work.

Only if you're unplugging the opener too. Merlin says that if you unplug the motor unit for a holiday or any other long stretch, you should also disconnect the battery backup, to get the most life out of the batteries and prevent damage. If you leave the opener plugged in while you're away, the backup stays charged and ready for a blackout.
