The short answer
A garage door that stops halfway has usually hit resistance or lost its settings. Common causes are blocked safety beams, drifted travel limits or force settings, a door binding in its tracks, or a door out of balance from weak or broken springs. Clear the doorway and check the beams. If it strains or hangs crooked, leave it and call.

Question 01
Why does my garage door stop halfway?
A garage door that stops halfway has usually met resistance, or the opener's settings no longer suit the door. B&D's CAD4 manual says its opener stops if something interferes on the way up and reverses if something interferes on the way down, including a binding or unbalanced door. Beams, travel limits and force settings are the other suspects.
Match what your door is doing to a row below. Do only the safe check in that row. If the last column says call, stop there.
| What the door does | Likely cause | Safe check | Stop and call? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stops part way up at the same spot every time | Up travel limit set short, or the up force set too light | Look for anything catching the door at that spot | Yes, if nothing is catching it |
| Stops part way up or down at random spots | Door binding in its tracks, or out of balance | Listen for scraping. Look along the tracks without touching springs or cables | Yes |
| Stops on the way down, then goes back up | Safety beams blocked or out of line, or the close force set too light | Clear the doorway. Wipe both beam lenses | Yes, if the beams are clear and lined up |
| Stops short of the floor and leaves a gap | Down travel limit, or the door binding low in its tracks | Check nothing is sitting on the floor under the door | Yes, if a clear floor doesn't fix it |
| Opener strains, slows or hums, then stops | Door out of balance or a broken spring | Stop pressing the button. Don't pull the release with the door open | Yes, straight away |
| Opener quits after being run many times in a row | Motor has overheated and shut off | Wait 15 minutes, then try once | Yes, if it happens in normal use |
| Stops or labours on a windy day | Strong wind pressing on the door and tracks | Leave it until the wind drops | Yes, if it still stops in calm weather |
Most of these rows end with a call because the fix sits in the opener's settings or in the door itself. Thom handles both, as garage door repairs or, where the opener has had its day, garage door motor replacement.
Question 02
Why does my garage door stop part way when it's opening?
A door that stops while opening is usually the opener reacting to resistance. B&D's CAD4 manual says its opener stops if anything interferes with upward travel. Merlin's MR800 manual lists three causes when a door reverses and stops before opening completely: an obstruction, a door out of balance, or broken springs. Up force set too light can do it too.
B&D's CAD4 manual says that if the forces are set too light, the door may stop on the way up and reverse for no good reason on the way down. So a door that stops opening at random is not always a broken part. But a door that has suddenly become heavy, lifts crooked or makes the opener strain points at the springs, and Merlin's manual says an opener that strains may have a door out of balance or broken springs.
Question 03
Why won't my garage door close all the way?
A garage door that won't close all the way most often has a blocked or misaligned safety beam, a down travel limit that has drifted, or a door binding low in its tracks. Steel-Line's opener tips say a door that doesn't close or open all the way needs its limit switches adjusted, normally on the back of the opener.
Work through these in order. None of them needs a ladder or a tool.
- Clear the floor under the door. A rake, a bin or a pile of leaves in the path will stop it.
- Check the safety beams. Steel-Line says that if a door stops during operation, check the sensors are clean, correctly aligned and have nothing blocking their path. The safety beams and auto-reverse guide covers lining them up.
- Watch where it stops. Steel-Line's RD1200 manual says the travel limits regulate where the door stops going up and down, so a door that stops at the same height every time points to the limits.
- Listen as it runs. B&D says scraping noises or irregular movement might indicate a problem. A door that drags in one spot is binding, and the opener can't fix that.
- Does it touch the floor, then go straight back up? That's a reversing door rather than one that stops, and garage door won't open or close covers it.
Steel-Line's roller door owners manual says the tracks should be kept free of dust and dirt, and lists a door that reverses during the closing action and goes back to open as one sign the tracks need attention.
Question 04
How do you adjust a garage door to close all the way?
On most openers, travel limits set where the door stops and force settings set how hard the motor pushes. Small changes matter. B&D's CAD4 manual says one turn of a limit screw equals 50mm of travel, and that wrongly set travel limits interfere with the safety reversal system. Get the settings checked rather than guessing.
Each brand sets limits differently. Some openers use screws, others learn the limits from buttons on the motor unit, and the steps for one model don't suit another. Whatever the brand, the makers agree on what comes after any change. Merlin's MR800 manual says to repeat the safety reverse test after any adjustment. B&D's CAD4 manual adds that if one control, force or travel, is adjusted, the other may need adjusting too.
Force is the setting people are most tempted to turn up, and the one to leave alone. Steel-Line's RD1200 manual says manual force adjustment should only be carried out by a suitably qualified technician.
Question 05
Is it the opener or the door that's stopping it?
Run the door by hand to find out. Merlin's MR800 manual says to close the door, pull the manual release and operate it manually. A properly balanced door stays at any point of travel, held by its springs alone. If it binds, feels heavy or won't stay put, it's the door. If it runs sweetly, look at the opener.
- Only start with the door fully closed. If it's stuck part way open, skip this test and call.
- Pull the release cord to unhook the door from the opener. The manual release guide shows how, and how to hook it back up.
- Lift the door slowly by hand. Feel for tight spots and listen for scraping or grinding.
- Raise it to about halfway and ease your grip without letting go. B&D says that if the door doesn't stay in place, the springs may need attention from a professional.
- If it drops or climbs, lower it under control, leave it shut and call. If it held, close it and reconnect the opener.
A door that ran smoothly and held at halfway points back to the opener: its limits, its force settings or a fault in the motor. A door that dragged or wouldn't hold is a door problem, and Merlin says an unbalanced or binding door needs a trained door systems technician. Roller door owners can read how to tell if a roller door is out of balance for the signs.
Question 06
Can hot weather or wind make a garage door stop part way?
Weather can change how a garage door runs. B&D's CAD4 manual says weather conditions can affect door movement, so occasional adjustment may be needed. Merlin's MR800 manual says weather may cause minor changes, particularly in the first year of operation. Wind is its own problem: Steel-Line says its RD1200 opener must not be operated in windy conditions.
So a door that worked all winter and starts stopping short in summer may simply need its settings checked. That's a check of the limits and force, followed by the safety reverse test, not a reason to crank the force up.
B&D's Smart Pro manual says very strong wind puts extra pressure on the door and tracks, which can set off the opener's obstruction detection now and then. Steel-Line's roller door owners manual says a door fitted with windlocks and an electric opener should not be used when it's windy. If storms are on the way, the storm and wind rating guide covers getting the door ready.
Question 07
When should I stop using a door that stops halfway?
Stop as soon as the door starts behaving differently. Merlin says to cease use as soon as you notice any changes, including the door stopping or bouncing up. Stop straight away if you heard a bang, the door hangs crooked, a cable looks slack or the opener strains. Leave the door shut if you can, keep everyone clear and call.
A door stuck half open overnight leaves the garage and the house open. Deadlock runs 7 days, 6am to 6pm, with 24/7 emergency callouts, and emergency garage door repairs explains what an after-hours visit covers. Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300, depending on the door size and the labour involved. Call Thom on 0402 882 653 or book a callout.
Local note
On the Sunshine Coast
Thom is an owner-operator based in Maroochydore, so a door that stops halfway anywhere from Mount Coolum to Mooloolaba is close to home. Summer brings two things that show up on this list. Storm season wind, which Steel-Line's RD1200 manual says its opener must not be run in, and the weather changes B&D and Merlin both say can change how a door runs. Near the beach, salt air wears springs, cables and steel fixings faster, and a stiff door is the kind an opener stops on. The salt air and rust guide covers coastal care, and a regular garage door service checks the door's running and the opener's safety reversal before a small drag becomes a stop.
Quick answers
More questions people ask
Suspect the limits when the door stops at the same height every time, either short of fully open or with a gap at the floor, and runs smoothly by hand. Steel-Line's RD1200 manual says the travel limits regulate where the door stops. B&D's CAD4 manual says getting them wrong interferes with the safety reversal, so follow your model's manual exactly and repeat the safety reverse test, or have them set as part of a garage door repair.
No. B&D's CAD4 manual says never use force adjustments to compensate for a binding or sticking door, and never increase force beyond the minimum needed to close it, because too much force interferes with the safety reversal. Steel-Line's RD1200 manual says manual force adjustment should only be carried out by a suitably qualified technician. A door that needs more force to move has a door problem that needs fixing first.
Yes. Merlin's MR800 manual names a door out of balance or broken springs as causes when a door reverses and stops before opening completely, and when the opener strains. B&D's CAD4 manual says a balanced door should stay in place when lifted halfway, supported entirely by its springs. If the door stopped part way up, don't pull the release cord, since Merlin warns an open door may fall rapidly with weak or broken springs. Keep clear and see spring repairs.
The motor may have overheated. B&D's CAD4 manual says repeated operation of its opener, as happens while settings are being adjusted, may cause the motor to overheat and shut off, and to simply wait 15 minutes and try again. If your opener cuts out after one or two normal runs, that's not overheating from use. Get the opener and the door checked, starting with a garage door repair callout.
It can be, if the door used to close fully and now doesn't. A new gap usually means the down travel limit has drifted, the door is binding low in its tracks, or something is on the floor. B&D's CAD4 manual says one turn of a limit screw equals 50mm of travel, so a small change to the setting makes a visible difference at the floor. Merlin's manual suggests checking monthly that the door opens and closes fully.
Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300, depending on the door size and the labour involved.
